Bounce Handling

Previous Topic  Next Topic

What is a “bounce”? In tech-jargon, a bounce (also called a delivery status notification) is a message you receive when the SMTP server has a problem trying to deliver your message to a recipient.

Because people sometimes change their email addresses, after some time your mailing list is bound to have a number of invalid ones. The next time you send a message to subscribers or a scheduled follow-up message, the server replies saying something along the lines of “Undeliverable mail”. If your mailing list is large, you may receive dozens of bounces every time you send anything.

FollowUpExpert can automatically handle bounces for you. Take a look at the "Mail Settings" tab:

If the “Enable returned (bounced) message handling” check box is not marked, bounces are treated like regular messages. It means that they are processed by your autoresponder/mailing list. In general, this is not a good idea. Bounces are sent from a ‘postmaster’ email address. If your autoresponder replies to a bounce, chances are it may result in another bounce. It replies again – another bounce. An infinite loop... As a minimum, you should mark this check box even if you choose not to process bounces in any way.

Click the “handling” link to bring up a window entitled “Bounce Handling Options”.

The window above shows the recommended configuration. You may also mark the other two check boxes but be aware that those errors may indicate a temporary problem. For instance, a message from you may be blocked because of its content. Press F1 while the “Bounce Handling Options” window is active to get more help.
