Composing Text-Only Messages

Top  Previous  Next

In this section you will learn how to create a simple text message without fancy fonts, colors and images.

This section is about editing the message text. To compose a message, you need to take care of certain message header fields as well. To find out more about this, read this section: Message Editor Header Fields.

Changing Message Format to Plain Text

To change the format of the message to plain text, use the drop-down list located on the upper toolbar:

Toolbar 3

Click the drop-down arrow, and choose "Plain Text". If your message already contains text, it's automatically converted to the new format.

Editing Message Text

Click the large text box located in the bottom part of the message editor window, and type your text there (see Message Text).

Press the Enter key to insert a new line of text. You cannot use text formatting toolbar buttons but you can use the clipboard-related commands (see Using Clipboard).

Inserting Data Fields

You can use the “Insert Field” toolbar button to insert a data field into the text. Read this section to learn more about data fields: Message Personalization (Mail Merge).

Inserting Hyperlinks

The bad news is that you cannot actually insert links into a text-only message; text messages cannot have formatting, they consist of unformatted text only. The good news is that all modern email programs automatically underline anything that looks like an Internet link or an email address and make it clickable. So to insert a link, simply type it there, e.g.:

http://www.yahoo.com

Inserting Click-Tracking Links

To insert a click-tracking link, click the "Insert Field" toolbar button , choose the link from the list, and click "OK".

Note: The link is not underlined; you cannot really add any formatting to text-only messages. The recipient's email program will automatically underline the link; 99.99% programs on the market have this feature so you do not have to worry about that.
