You can insert two kinds of pictures into your message. Of course, FollowUpExpert’s message editor supports all common image formats including PNG, GIF, JPG, WMF and much more. But what I mean is that you have a choice of including the whole image as a part of your message (resulting in larger messages) or just referencing an image hosted on your web server (smaller messages).
Picture Window
To insert a new picture, click the exact place in text where you want to insert it (or move the text-editing caret using the cursor keys), and click the “Insert Picture” button
Type the Internet address (URL) of the picture or its local path in the “Picture Source” text box, or use the “Browse” button to point to the picture.
Type text describing the picture in the “Alternate Text” text box. The text appears when the user’s mouse cursor is over the image and when the user’s email client decides not to display the picture.
Specify the picture’s alignment using the “Alignment” drop-down list. Possible values:
To add border to the picture type the border’s width in pixels in the “Border Thickness” text box. You can also specify the vertical and horizontal margin by typing its width in either or both of the text boxes grouped under the “Spacing” label (“Vertical” and “Horizontal”).
Inserting Pictures Hosted on a Web Server
Using an image hosted on a web server results in smaller messages which means you can send them much faster. The size of a message you want to send to a large number of recipients has a huge impact on how long it is going to take to deliver those messages. Additionally, if a message is small, the recipients can download them much faster. There is nothing more annoying than a message that takes ages to download from the server. If you use links to images, your messages are going to download very fast.
IMPORTANT: The downside is that some email clients may block this kind of images or even mark messages containing them as spam.
Before using a picture hosted on a web server in a message it must, of course, be uploaded to the web server and you need to know its Internet address (URL). For example, this is an Internet address of FollowUpExpert’s screenshot hosted on our web server:
http://www.xtreeme.com/followupxpert/images/screenshot.png.
To insert this kind of picture, use the “Insert Picture” button
Embedding Pictures into the Message
If you decide to include an entire image with the message, the size of the image will add up to the size of the message; if you add a 50KB image to 2KB of text, it is going to result in a 52KB message (the message will actually be larger than 52KB because of some necessary transformations).
The good news is that the recipient’s email client should display the image without any problems unlike hosted images (see the previous section).
To insert an embedded picture, click the “Insert Picture” button
Positioning and Resizing Pictures
After you insert a picture, you can resize it, and move it around using the mouse.
To move a picture, simply drag it to wherever you want to place it. You cannot move the image completely freely around. What influences the image’s position is its alignment.
To resize a picture, click it once using the left mouse window. A number of small white rectangles called “handles” will appear around the picture. Position the mouse cursor over the handle you want to move, press and hold the left mouse button, move the mouse cursor to where you want to move the handle, and release the button.
