Tutorial: Importing Subscribers from File

Top  Previous  Next

This tutorial shows step-by-step how you can create a basic mailing list, and import subscribers from a file.

Create or Choose Existing Mailing List

To create a new mailing list, click the "New" button on the main window toolbar, and click "Mailing List / Follow-up Machine". This opens the "Mailing List" window. Enter the name for the new mailing list in the "Name" text box; example: "My Customers".

Alternatively, you can open an existing mailing list by double-clicking its icon.

Import Subscribers

To add/remove and edit subscribers, click the "Subscribers" tab. The tab shows a scrollable list of all subscribers and a number of buttons that perform various functions. See Adding/Removing Subscribers by Hand for more details.

To import names and addresses from a file, click the "Import" button, and choose "From file". Browse to the file you want, and click "Open".

Hint: The program tries to detect the format of the file but you can override its choice using the controls under "File format". For a list of supported formats, see: Supported Data Formats.

Finally, you need to tell FollowUpExpert which column is saved to which subscriber field. For every column you want to import into the program, choose the target field using the drop-down list to the right of the column.

Hint: If you are using Business edition or better, you may choose "Add Field..." from the list or click the "Manage Subscriber Fields" button to create new custom fields for columns such as phone, city, country, and so on).

Finally, click the "Import" button.

The program automatically detects duplicate email addresses and if it finds any duplicates, it asks you what to do about them. Whatever you choose, the resulting mailing list will always end up containing only unique email addresses, so there is no worry someone is going to receive your newsletter more than once.

Save the Changes

Click the "OK" button to save your changes, and close the "Mailing List" window.

Note: The setup of the mailing list may be incomplete at this point; as a minimum, you need to choose an outgoing mail server on the "Mail Settings" tab (see Outgoing Mail).
