Search engine options

Note: you can find out more about creating a search engine in the tutorial: Creating a search engine for a website.

Server OS - Choose operating system and processor of the server hosting your website. If you cannot find proper configuration, please check our technical support section or send an email to sitexpert@xtreeme.com. We will create a version matching your webserver's specification.

Template file for results page - You can create a template file that will be displayed on all search pages. This template file has the same format as template file defined in options/content. You can choose to use the same template file for the first page and result pages, or you can choose a different template file or no template file at all.

Advanced options / Memory and disk management - You should be careful when changing these options which determine memory and disk resources used by the search engine. You can use one of the predefined standard choices.

Advanced options / Root directory of relative links (for indexing URLs) - Specify the default source root (website) for relative links. This value is used by search engine generator to properly locate and index relative URLs. This value will not appear anywhere in the generated search engine (it is only used for indexing purposes). In other words, the value entered in this field is the prefix added to all relative links, together making a valid URL. This value has no effect on absolute paths. You can enter a domain name (e.g. http://www.xtreeme.com/), UNC name (e.g. \\MyWorkstation\www\) or local path

Advanced options / Root directory of relative links (for generated URLs) - Specify the default target root (website) for relative links. This value will be used by search engine generator to form proper URLs on search results pages. In other words, the value entered in this field is the prefix added to all relative links, together making a valid URL. This value has no effect on absolute paths. You can enter a domain name (e.g. http://www.xtreeme.com/), UNC name (e.g. \\MyWorkstation\www\) or local path

Rebuild search database - Rebuilding search database is necessary if you want the search engine to reflect changes in your website after removing or updating previously indexed documents. If new documents have been added to the search engine database but no documents have changed or been deleted, rebuilding is not necessary. You can choose on of three options to specify when database will be rebuilt. You can also select 'Rebuild database the next time search is generated' to rebuild database (only once) the next time you click the 'Generate' button on program toolbar.

Keyword ranking of... - Determines the influence of a keyword belonging to one of the listed groups on total score for given URL/keyword pair. For example, using these options you can ignore all regular keywords in documents (they will not be indexed in search engine).

Max description length - Sets max description length for indexed URLs. These descriptions will appear under each search result. Setting this value to zero tells SiteXpert not to save or display descriptions.

Min keyword length - Determines min. keyword length required to add keyword to search database.

Max result count - Maximum number of results in query. Increasing this value may result in longer execution time of the CGI script.

Display search engine creator info - This switch will add 'Powered by Xtreeme SiteXpert' text and icon on search pages. You can turn this switch off only in Professional Edition.

Add SiteXpert template information - Select this switch if you want to use the start page as template file for a sitemap. This will allow placing both search engine and sitemap on a single HTML page. to main search page.

Allow visitors to choose number of results displayed on a single page - Select this switch if you want SiteXpert to generate a dropdown list with number of returned results for a page.

Customize message texts - Click to edit texts of all messages in the search engine. This will allow complete translation of search engine into a different language.

If generating frames, show search results page in the document frame - When this option is selected and frames are used, search box appears in one frame, and search results appear in the other (document) frame. When the user selects a URL from search results, the URL is opened in the document frame as well. If this option is deselected, search results appear in the same frame as the search box, but URLs from search results are opened in the other (document) frame.

Character translation - This opens a character translation window which is most useful when creating search engines for languages with special characters. Adding translations of special characters, e.g. 'ü' -> 'ue' will ensure that when the user enters 'über' and 'ueber' into the search box, both search queries will be treated in the same way. You can also use this dialog to tell SiteXpert to ignore certain characters.
